The people who made Friends tried many times to pair up the main characters. Unfortunately, only one pair (Joey and Rachel) worked, and it was the one fans least expected.
Friends made people laugh with funny, unexpected things that happened in the lives of six friends who had to learn how to be adults together. Rachel, Ross, Joey, Chandler, Monica, and Phoebe talk about their personal lives to show that happiness is possible no matter what.
Some of these friends ran into each other and fell in love, like Joey and Rachel (Courteney Cox and Matthew Pery). By chance, they became lovers, boyfriends, and husband and wife.
But not every love story in the series worked out. Ross and Rachel, played by David Schwimmer and Jennifer Aniston, decide to get back together in the end, but the audience stops caring about their love story at one point in the story.
Though the relationship between Joey (Matt LeBlanc) and Rachel (Jennifer Aniston) was one of the most well-known plots that fans hated, it lasted three long seasons. Fans and critics said that the actors didn’t have chemistry on screen and that the relationship didn’t make sense in theory or real life. They did nothing to help that new couple get along. Knowing that they would only ever think of each other as friends.
David Crane, who helped make the show, said that the actors had also complained about Rachel and Joey’s relationship, saying it was like falling in love with a brother or sister.
In an interview with the Radio Times after the backlash, David Crane said that he knew the idea would be controversial and wanted the Friends characters to try it out because he knew it would be a problem. He thinks you won’t always be with someone you love, no matter how much you love them. This is very true in the real world.
